Where the "super El Nino" label comes from
"Super El Nino" shows up in headlines a lot, usually attached to a big scary percentage. It's worth knowing upfront: NOAA does not use the term. It isn't one of the official categories in NOAA's strength-band system (weak, moderate, strong, very strong), and it won't appear in a CPC ENSO Diagnostic Discussion. "Super El Nino" is popular-media shorthand, applied after the fact and inconsistently, to describe an event that lands at the very top of NOAA's own very strong band — generally an ONI or RONI anomaly of +2.0°C or higher.
The usual comparison set
Because "very strong" is already NOAA's top formal category, "super" gets used informally to single out the handful of events that cleared +2.0°C by a wide margin, or held there for an unusually long stretch. In practice, most "super El Nino" comparisons online are built from the same four events:

Those four are the strongest El Nino events in NOAA's ONI record since 1950 and the standard reference set any "how does this year compare" story reaches for (the underlying series is published by CPC as the ONI table). Worth remembering, though: a shared label doesn't mean shared behavior. All four cleared the same rough magnitude threshold, but their US impacts differed in real ways — 2015-16 is the frequently-cited example of a top-tier event that still underdelivered on the wet signal it was "supposed to" bring to Southern California. Why we don't lead with a single "super El Nino" percentage
CPC and IRI don't forecast ENSO strength as a yes/no on "very strong." What they actually publish is a probability distribution — separate percentage odds for the season landing in the weak, moderate, strong, and very strong bands (plus ENSO-neutral or La Nina, when those are live possibilities), all adding up to 100%. A lot of ENSO coverage takes that distribution, picks out the top category, and turns it into one headline number: "X% chance of a super El Nino." We think that step throws away the most useful part of the forecast. Collapsing a five-way distribution into a single figure hides how confident the forecast actually is (a narrow, concentrated distribution behaves very differently from a wide, spread-out one, even if they'd summarize to the same headline number), and it invites exactly the kind of false-certainty framing this site tries to avoid.
So we've made it a deliberate, named policy — we call it the full-distribution rule: any time this site shows a strength or category probability, it's shown as the complete breakdown across bands, sourced straight from CPC/IRI, never collapsed into one isolated headline percentage. It's the same discipline behind two of our other standing rules — we never assign a single "Critical" risk label to a region from an index value alone, and every number on this site carries a "data as of" timestamp so you know exactly how fresh it is.
